ACSS offers a number of support services to those who dedicate their time to helping seniors in our community. To take advantage of any of this support, please call the office at 463-4439.
GOALS OF THE CAREGIVERS SUPPORT PROGRAM:
•To provide information about available services
•To assist in gaining access to services
•Outreach visits to access services
•Support group to provide support to caregivers in a group setting
•To provide respite care during support meetings
•To provide respite care for brief periods of relief or rest for the caregiver
ARE YOU A CAREGIVER?
•If you are responsible for helping someone manage their daily lives, you are a caregiver.
•If you are providing care for a parent, a spouse or a loved one, then you are a caregiver.
•If you help with personal care, provide meals, transportation, pay bills or help regularly with housework, you are a caregiver.
•Caregivers provide varying degrees of support. Some help with just a few things, while others give total care on a 24-hour basis.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED SUPPORT?
Additional support might be helpful if you:
•Feel isolated and lonely
•Have an increase in physical problems such as flu, colds or headaches
•Have stopped taking time out for yourself
•Have lost interest in activities you preciously enjoyed
•Feel overwhelmed by the situation
•Are unable to make decisions
•Find the rewards of caregiving are overshadowed by guilt, exhaustion and resentment
At ACSS, the caregiver takes center stage. The facilitator is only there to guide the discussion and show support, but it's the caregiver who is the driving force of the support groups.
Our support group meets the first and third Wednesday of each month from 1-2 p.m. This group is for anyone who provides varying degrees of support to a parent, spouse or child. The only requirement is that either the caregiver or the person being cared for is 60 years of age or older. Meeting are held at the Golden Friendship Center at 509 S. Bellevue.
