READY, STEADY, BALANCE-STEPPING ON
South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) is sponsoring a Stepping On Workshop at the Golden Friendship Center beginning January 11 and ending on February 22. Stepping On is designed specifically for anyone who is 65 or older, has had a fall in the past year, is fearful of falling, lives at home and does not have dementia. This workshop will meet every Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for seven weeks. Stepping On will teach exercises and strategies to help you prevent falls. Registration is required and class size is limited. For more information or to register for the workshop, please call SHDHD at 402-462-6211.

WINTER WEATHER POLICY
If Hastings is under threat of a winter snow or ice storm, if streets are dangerous to drive on, or if wind chills are in the sub-zero range, be sure to watch NTV Channel 13 (the Kearney Station) or listen to KHAS Radio (located at 1230 AM on the radio dial) to confirm that ACSS meals and other services have been cancelled. If you are registered for a day the meal is cancelled, your name will remain on the list for the next serving day. The missed menu will carry over to the next day. Please call (402) 463-4439 Ext. 11 by 9:30 a.m. on the new serving day if you wish to cancel.
On a winter weather related topic: Snow and ice can increase the chance for falls. Please, please, please be careful. Stay at home and stay safe if it is too icy out. It is ACSS Policy to call 911 should a fall occur. EMTs will be called to assess the situation and provide lift assist.

NEW MEDICARE CARDS COMING SOON
New cards will be mailed to beneficiaries starting April 2018 through April 2019. Cards will have randomly generated numbers that have no hidden or special meaning. Social Security numbers will no longer be used for Medicare numbers. The new numbers will be safer and more difficult to be used for fraud. Mailings will be randomized by geographical area. The card will include a letter with instructions. Beneficiaries need to make sure their address is current with Social Security so the new card is not lost or delayed. You still need to protect your new Medicare Card in the same way you protected your former card.
Scams have already begun. For example: "Hello Mrs. Jones, I am calling to verify your Medicare information so we can print your new card," or "Hello Mrs. Jones, I am calling to expedite your new Medicare Card. Let's just verify some things and for $9.99 I can get that card right out to you." In both instances, HANG UP! If you receive a Medicare card prior to April 2018, it is a scam. You may get a call 7 to 10 days after an on-line application for Medicare, but that is the exception. If your card is ever compromised, a new card can be issued. That cannot be done with the current Medicare Cards.
